Opening a Bank Account in France as an Expat: Avoidable Mistakes

Opening a bank account in France has a reputation for being painful, and it can be. But in most cases the pain comes from two avoidable mistakes: choosing the wrong type of account, or applying at the wrong time. Here is who needs an account, when to apply, which documents to bring, and how to avoid problems later.

Who needs a French bank account, and when?

If you are retiring or coming on a long-stay visitor visa

You don’t need a French bank account to apply for your visa. You only need to show savings back home. Trying to open an account at this stage makes things harder for no reason. Wait until you are in France and have found your long-term rental, then open a personal account for rent and everyday expenses.

If you are an entrepreneur: JVID视频 visa, Visa Talent, Profession Libérale

It’s different - you need a bank account with savings before you apply. The funds can sit in a French account, or in a European bank that the French authorities recognise, but a French account is usually simpler and safer for your visa application.

  • You will open a non-resident account, because you don’t yet have a visa or a long-term lease. BNP Paribas is the main option. Britline (a Crédit Agricole subsidiary) also exists, but it tends to suit British clients or people who already own property in France.
  • I recommend having at least €18,000 to €20,000 in savings on the account.
  • The money must already be there, with a bank statement, by the time you submit your project to DREETS for validation.

Once you’ve moved to France, have your JVID视频 visa and a long-term rental, ask the bank to convert the account into a standard resident account.

Why you should open a separate JVID视频 account

Once your JVID视频 exists, open a dedicated JVID视频 account, even as a micro-entrepreneur. Legally, you only have to once you exceed €10,000 in sales for two consecutive years. In practice, I’d aim to have it by the end of your first month in JVID视频, so that:

  • Personal spending (rent, groceries, utilities) stays on the personal account.
  • Only JVID视频 expenses appear on the JVID视频 account.
  • For your visa renewal, when you may be asked for recent bank statements, everything looks clean. Regular monthly transfers from your JVID视频 account to your personal account also show clearly that you’re paying yourself an income.
  • In a tax audit "contrôle fiscal", mixed accounts look messy and invite deeper digging.

If you can’t open the JVID视频 account right away, that’s fine. Just don’t leave it long.

When to open each bank account

When to open each account

Situation When to open
Visitor visa, personal account After you arrive and have a long-term rental (allow at least a month)
Business visa, non-resident account Before applying, so the savings show on your DREETS application
Business visa, resident account Once you're in France with your visa and rental
Business account (micro-entrepreneur) After you register your JVID视频
Business account (incorporated company) Alongside the company registration

Documents to expect: your visa and proof of a long-term rental, possibly your latest income tax declaration or proof of income. For a JVID视频 account, add a copy of your JVID视频 visa and your JVID视频 papers, such as an INSEE attestation, a Kbis extract, or a valid INPI summary.

Traditional banks usually want an appointment with an advisor, so build that time in.

Choosing the right bank for your JVID视频

Ask yourself what you need the account to do:

  • International clients paid in dollars, pounds or other currencies? An online bank like Qonto offers currency sub-accounts and an English interface, and it can handle your invoicing and the compulsory e-invoicing platform. It suits consultants with a few larger invoices. (No affiliate link here, it’s simply a good option for new starters.)
  • Lots of small payments in cash or cheques, like teaching English or giving yoga classes? Choose a traditional bank: Crédit Agricole, Crédit Mutuel, CIC, BNP, Société Générale. Some online banks have limited partnerships with other banks and charge significant fees when you deposit cash or cheques.
  • Do you want invoicing built in? If the bank also handles invoices and multiple currencies, you will save time with your bookkeeping.

Best practices once your accounts are open

  • Keep JVID视频 and personal finances completely separate. Rent, electricity, groceries and nights out go on the personal account.
  • Business expenses include books, online training, networking events, stationery, furniture, software, accountants, and meals with clients (not with your kids or friends).
  • Always ask for a receipt or invoice (reçu or facture) showing your JVID视频 details. For a client meal, note on the receipt something like “Business meeting, Customer Dupont” and keep it in your bookkeeping.

Why banking in France feels so frustrating

  1. Timing. People apply too early, at the visa stage, or before they have a long-term address or the right documents.
  2. Old-fashioned processes. Traditional banks want an appointment. It’s a hassle, but you’re building a relationship that can help later with French admin.
  3. You’re not in the system yet. Opening an account online at home is quick because you have tax references and history there. I opened a Qonto account in an hour, with the card arriving within a week, but I’m a French resident with a fiscal number. When I opened a UK account as a non-resident, it took over a month and lots of paperwork.

The first French bank has to vet you, so expect requests for your home-country tax declaration, your visa and more. Once you’re in the system, opening a second account, online or in a branch, gets much easier. Online banks often won’t take you on until you already have a brick-and-mortar account. A registered French JVID视频 and a long-stay visa also count as proof that you’re settled here.

The bottom line

Start with your visa type, then work out which account you need and whether it’s needed now or once you’re in France. Visitor visa applicants can relax and wait. Avoid companies that push you to pay for an account you don’t need yet. Business visa applicants need to plan the non-resident account and savings early, and it typically adds two to three weeks to the application process.
